AS and Me...

Well friends, again I wish you Happy New Year!  May God bless you, your family and friends, and your ministry, if you have one!

This past weekend was very busy for me, as I am sure it was for you!  Probably for different reasons, though.

Of course, I arrived at the YMCA/YWCA (Y) when it opened at 8:00 a.m., Saturday morning.  Even on the day of New Year's Eve, I was there doing my thing, in the pool.

Some of you may wonder why I do this.  Well, you may/may not be aware, but since I was in a major collision many years ago, suffering multiple and various injury, and after having a subsequent back injury, I have been partially-disabled.  In addition to my physical limitations, I contracted a rare form of Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA), called Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS).

AS affects the body in various ways, with the possibility of inflammation affecting not just joints, but also various parts of the body, like:  eyes, heart, lungs, kidneys, etc.  After having received cortisone blocks many years ago, as treatment to bring down inflammation in my spine, my eye flared up from massive inflammation; later, I was told I should never have anything invasive done to the spine, because it did bring on this massive flare-up.

During that initial flare-up, I almost lost my eye.  I was blind for several weeks, because when inflammation increases in the eye, it brings on Glaucoma.  After seeing a diagnostic specialist in London, Ontario, Canada, I returned to Windsor and the diagnosis was confirmed by a Rheumatologist; I have AS.

AS affects people differently than most other forms of arthritis.  It can cause vertebrae to knit together, thereby affecting the ability to stand, walk, etc.  Most people end up in a wheelchair.  In fact, most people with AS don't work.  So, I am an unusual person.

Not only have I refused to allow AS to totally destroy my life, I have relied on God to provide healing for me.  Of course, I know He provided my Chiropractor to help me with my physical healing.

No, I am not fully healed.  I may never be.  At least, until I go to heaven.  But, God has provided a measure of healing for me.  Enough that I can now do some exercise, unlike times in the past.

So, when I say that I do pool exercise, because I can, I truly mean it!

Most types of excercise I cannot do.  I cannot walk long distances.  Nor, can I ride a bicycle, even a stationary one, for any length of time.

Once my chiropractor helped me enough that I could do some pool exercise, I worked out in our pool; but, it is only open during the summer months, as it is an outdoor pool.

When my personal trainer friend suggested that I may have become strong enough to work out at her home gym, I tried it and found I could do it!  Thank you, to M, for helping me become much stronger, because when I first worked out with her, I was in a very weakened condition.

Now, I am working out in the pool at the Y, six (6) days per week.  I intend to not just become healthier, but stronger, if possible.  If it is God's will, I know it will happen!

Until next time...
